Austria Wine Regions
Despite being known as the "Republic of the Alps", Austria's diverse climates and soils are ideal for wine production. Because the western part of Austria is covered by mountainous terrain, viticulture takes place mainly on the eastern flank of the country. The Austrian wine industry dates back centuries. In fact the Austrian flagship wine "Gruener Veltliner", produced in 37% of the Austrian vineyards today, was created in the 10th century. Austria produces 1 % of the world's wine production, exporting 30 % of the production. The main markets to which Austrian wine is exported are Germany, Switzerland and the United States.
